SMS Alert about Weather Conditions being Provided to Farmers 


The Gramin Krishi Mausam Seva (GKMS) of Earth System Science Organization (ESSO)-India Meteorological Department (IMD) is rendered on twice weekly basis in collaboration with State Agricultural Universities (SAUs), institutions of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), IITs etc. 

Giving this information in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today the Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan said that district level weather forecast for next 5-days is provided to farmers in respect of: 

Rainfall 
maximum temperature, minimum temperature
wind speed, wind direction
relative humidity and clouds
weekly cumulative rainfall forecast 

The GKMS of ESSO-IMD has been successful in providing the crop specific advisories to the farmers through different print/visual/Radio/ IT based media including short message service (SMS) and Interactive Voice Response Service (IVRS) facilitating for appropriate field level actions. Weather forecast based agro-meteorological advisories are disseminated through Kisan portal launched by the Ministry of Agriculture and also under public private partner. At present, the GKMS products are disseminated through SMS and IVRS to 11.5 million farmers in the country. 

The SMS services are meant for any farmer across the country who registers in Kisan Portal or through the designated SMS service providers under public private partnership (PPP) mode. 

ESSO-IMD also launched an SMS-based alert system for general public for dissemination of weather and disaster-related (cyclone, severe weather storms, heavy rains) information. Under this round-the-clock web-based operational system, the ESSO-IMD will send SMS to individuals who would register themselves at the weather forecaster's official website (www.imd.gov.in) for this purpose. Besides giving information about natural calamities, the system will also suggest what action needs to be taken. 

ESSO-IMD had a mobile application for Android based smart phone/tablets. The mobile app by the name “Indian Weather” is downloadable from Google play store, free of cost. Presently, the app provides current weather and 4 days weather forecast across the country for 310 cities. The mobile app. shall also be hosted for free download from the government mobile appstore (https:/apps.mgov.gov.in/indwx.isp).

Development of Technology for Extraction of Gas from the Marine Gas Hydrates in Deep Sea 

National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) under the aegis of Ministry of Earth Science, Government of India is engaged in developing technologies for establishing the feasibility of. A Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle and an Autonomous Coring System have been developed for the exploration of gas hydrates. Giving this information in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today the Union Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences Dr. Harsh Vardhan said various experiments are being conducted for studying efficacy of various techniques in extraction of gas from the hydrates. Experiments at the potential gas hydrates sites have also been planned in association with offshore industry for establishing the technical feasibility of extraction of gas from the marine gas hydrates.

Thunderstorm Accompanied with Squall/Hailstorm is likely at some Places of the Country over Next Three or Four Days 

India Meteorological Department (IMD) in its bulletin has given information that thunderstorm accompanied with squall/hailstorm is likely at some places of the country over next three or four days.  It says an intense western disturbance currently lying over Iran and neighbourhood would affect Indian sub-continent from 11th onwards.  Various States and Regions likely to be affected on various days from tomorrow onwards till coming Monday are :

Weather expectation as per the Reports by the IMD indicate that :
·         Rain/snowfall at most places over western Himalayan region mainly from 11th to 13th.
·         Rain/thundershowers at most/many places over plains of northwest India  from 11th to 13th.
·         Rain/thundershowers at few places over central India on 12th & 13th and over East India mainly on 13th to 15th.
·         Rain/thundershowers at few places over north eastern States and in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 14th.

IMD also issued Multi Hazard Weather Warnings as follows:
·         Heavy rain/snowfall at one or two places over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh from 11th to 13th. Thunderstorm accompanied with squall/hailstorm also likely at one or two places over Jammu Division, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
·         Thunderstorm accompanied with strong winds and isolated hailstorm over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh from 11th to 13th, over West Rajasthan on 11th & 12th and over East Rajasthan & East Uttar Pradesh on 12th & 13th.
·         Thunderstorm accompanied with strong winds and isolated hailstorm over Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha on 12th & 13th and over Chhattisgarh on 13th & 14th.
·         Thunderstorm accompanied with squall/hailstorm at one or two places over Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal on 13th-14th.
·         Thunderstorm accompanied with squall/hailstorm at one or two places over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on 14th.
Advisory for Farmers is as follows:
o       Maintain proper drainage channels
o       Postpone irrigation
o       Undertake harvesting of matured crops at the earliest
o       Keep harvested produce in safer place
o       Use hail nets/hail caps to protect from mechanical damage in orchards
o       Keep animals indoor during Thunderstorm/hail hours
