President of India awards certificates of honour to eminent scholars of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian and the Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman to young scholars 


The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee awarded Certificates of Honour to eminent scholars of Sanskrit, Pali/Prakrit, Arabic and Persian and the Maharishi Badrayan Vyas Samman to young scholars for the year 2015 today (March 11, 2016) at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Rashtrapati Bhavan to host week-long ‘festival of innovations’ from March 12 to 19, 2016 

Rashtrapati Bhavan will host from March 12 to 19, 2016 a week long Festival of Innovations in collaboration with the National Innovation Foundation (NIF).  

The Festival will open with the inauguration of an Exhibition of Innovations on March 12, 2016 by the President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee.  The Exhibition will remain open between 1000 to 1700 hrs for the public including all visitors to the Mughal Gardens during the above Festival. 

Besides the above, the Festival of Innovations will included three exhibitions, two workshops, four group discussions, two award presentation ceremonies and a roundtable on different topics. 

Some highlights of the Festival are:

·         A keynote address by Shri Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel Laureate on March 13, 2016.
·         Presentation of Visitor’s Award on March 14, 2016 in the categories of ‘Best University’, ‘Innovation’ and ‘Research’ to Tezpur University, Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar of JNU and Molecular Parasitology Group of JNU respectively. 

·         Presentation of Gandhian Young Technological Innovation (GYTI) Award on March 13, 2016 

·         Exhibition of posters on outstanding achievements by National Innovation Clubs and outstanding Technology Business Incubators (TBIs); exhibition of outstanding innovations in medical science and bio-technology; and exhibition of outstanding innovations related to Swachh Bharat on March 15, 16 and 18, 2016 respectively.

·         Roundtable sessions  on topics such as (a) Inclusive Innovation; (b) Leveraging Science, Technology and Innovation; (c) Education for inclusive innovation development; (d) Inclusive Innovation Incubation & Acceleration Models for Innovative Start-ups; (e) Innovation and Skill Development; (f) Incentives for Innovation in Public Policy & Programmes; (g) Social Innovations for large scale change; (h) Public Service delivery; (i) innovations in medical science and bio-technology; and (j) Financing options for funding innovations. The key recommendations of the roundtable discussions will be presented to the President.

·         An interaction of scientists with grassroots innovators on March 16, 2016.

·         Meeting of representatives from National Innovation Clubs of Central Institutes of higher learning from across the country on March 15, 2016.

·         A coding competition on March 19, 2016 to develop web and mobile applications in hackathon style (non-stop rapid development) on subjects such as student attendance, authentication of examinees during examinations, monitoring of entry into public monuments and monitoring of public toilets etc.


·         Workshop of innovative and creative children on March 14, 2016 and a workshop with farmer innovators and Community Workshop Coordinators on March 18, 2016.

President of India’s message on the eve of 48TH anniversary of Independence Day of Mauritius 

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has extended his greetings and felicitations to the Government and people of the Republic of Mauritius on the eve of the 48th anniversary of their Independence Day (March 12, 2016). 

In a message to Her Excellency Dr. (Mrs.) Ameenah Gurib- Fakim, the President of the Republic of Mauritius, the President has said, “On behalf of the Government, the people of India and on my own behalf, it is with great pleasure that I extend warm greetings and felicitations to you and to the friendly people of Mauritius on the occasion of the 48th anniversary of the Independence Day of the Republic of Mauritius. 

The date, March 12 is significant in the history of the political struggle of both our countries. It symbolises our shared commitment to the democratic principles of liberty, equality and fraternity. 

India and Mauritius enjoy a longstanding and special relationship based on our historical ties of kinship and shared cultural heritage. 2015 was a landmark year in this friendship. The important commitments and decisions concluded during this period have re-energized our cooperation and strengthened our close friendship. 

I warmly recall your visit to India in December 2015 and our frank and fruitful discussions which, too, have contributed to the enhancement of our extraordinary and unique bilateral relations. I am confident that these will continue to deepen in the years ahead to the mutual benefit of our two peoples. Please accept, Excellency, my best wishes for your personal well being and success, as well as for the progress and prosperity of the friendly people of the Republic of Mauritius”.

Tezpur University and JNU win the annual Visitor’s Awards for Central Universities 

Tezpur University has won the annual Visitor’s Award for the ‘Best University’ and Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar as well as the Molecular Parasitology Group of JNU have won the Visitor’s Awards for ‘Research’ and ‘Innovation’ respectively. 

President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee will present Visitor’s Awards for the year 2016 at a function to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on March 14, 2016, as part of the ‘Festival of Innovations’. President Pranab Mukherjee had announced institution of these awards at the Vice Chancellors’ Conference, 2014 with the aim of promoting healthy competition amongst Central Universities and motivating them to adopt best practices from across the world. 

The Visitor’s Award for ‘Innovation’ will be given to Prof. Rakesh Bhatnagar of Jawaharlal Nehru University for development of a genetically engineered vaccine and a therapeutic antibody against anthrax. 

The Visitor’s Award for ‘Research’ will be presented to the Molecular Parasitology Group of Jawaharlal Nehru University of pioneering work in the area of molecular parasitology, especially anti-malaria, leishmaniasis and amoebiasis. 

The ‘Best University’ will receive a Citation and Trophy while winners of Visitor’s Award for ‘Innovation’ and ‘Research’ will receive a Citation and cash award of Rs. one lakh. 

For selecting the winners, online applications were invited from all Central Universities for each category. A Selection Committee headed by Smt. Omita Paul, Secretary to the President and with Secretaries of Department of Higher Education and Department of Science & Technology as well as Chairman, UGC; DG, CSIR etc as members chose the winners of the Awards. 

A week-long ‘Festival of Innovations’ is being held in Rashtrapati Bhavan from March 12 to 19, 2016. It will commence with the inauguration of an exhibition of grassroot innovations on March 12, 2016 by President Pranab Mukherjee. The Festival will witness a number of exhibitions; roundtable discussions on different topics related to innovations; group discussions; an award for Gandhian Young Technological Innovation; a meeting of Innovation Clubs set up in institutions of higher education; a workshop for children and a hackathon etc.

President of India congratulates ISRO for the successful launch of PSLV-C32 carrying IRNSS-1F 

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee has congratulated the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for the successful launch of PSLV-C32 carrying IRNSS-1F, India’s sixth navigation satellite of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System. 

In a message to Shri A.S. Kiran Kumar, Chairman of ISRO, the President has said, “I extend my hearty congratulations to you and your entire team at the Indian Space Research Organisation on the successful launch of PSLV-C32 carrying IRNSS-1F, India’s sixth navigation satellite of the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS). Today’s achievement demonstrates, once more, India’s increasing space capabilities. 

Kindly convey my greetings to the members of your team of scientists, engineers, technologists and all others associated with this mission. I wish all your future endeavours great success”.
